Double Face of Democracy

Clinical psychiatrist Su Wei-shuo, who followed closely the issue of pork containing ractopamine, published a comment claiming that ractopamine pork is poisonous. Ever since, Doctor Su was not only harassed by the police which interrogated him but was also considered by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) to be an author of false rumors. The MOHW accused him of violating the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation. This incident caused a social uproar criticizing the current government is worse than martial law period. In the meantime, president Tsai posted comment on Facebook supporting Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Media. The contrast is ridiculous and ironic.
Lai was handcuffed by Hong Kong police the other day and delivered with his waist chained to Hong Kong court for trial. President Tsai Ing-wen posted an article on Facebook to support him saying “this nearly humiliating picture is creating a chilling effect.” President Tsai stressed: “I will support Mr. Lai without equivocation. I hope to let him know that the whole Taiwan and the whole world are watching this scene. The one humiliated is not Mr. Lai but also the democracy and rule of law of Hong Kong.”
How sonorous and powerful are her words! But if she looks back at how the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is clamping down the freedom of speech in Taiwan, won’t she be ashamed and diffident? To use the logic of her words, we can also put it this way: “The one humiliated is not CtiTV News television station but the democracy and freedom of speech of Taiwan.”
The Hong Kong government, criticized by the DPP as an autocratic dictatorship, did not block Apple Daily, the DPP administration outrageously blocked CtiTV News. Right now, even a view based upon professional scientific documents, dissertations and evidence yet different to the official position is not tolerated by the authorities and has to face interviews by police and judicial pursuit.
Doctor Su has followed closely the import of ractopamine meat for as long as 12 years. From ractopamine beef to ractopamine pork, he has repeatedly promoted the toxicity of ractopamine and its harmful effect to human body. In 2012 during the Kuomintang (KMT) administration because his opposition to ractopamine, he was invited by DPP to deliver a presentation for legislators. Now that the DPP is the ruling party, Su has become a “rumor maker” and has to be sent to justice.
That the DPP has long been called a “double standard party” is not surprising, even is nearly deceptive and fraudulent. The standard of free speech can only be set up by the DPP, rights and benefits can only be enjoyed exclusively by DPP supporters. From suppressing Doctor Su’s dissent from a people’s livelihood perspective to supporting Lai for his dissension based on a political motivation, the DPP administration suddenly on one occasion acted as secret police revived, on another occasion acted as defender of freedom and democracy. These actions will make the people insane if they are to take the DPP seriously.
